Making A Difference
In the past few years, more rape cases have been reported. This does not mean that there have been more cases; it means that women are more willing to come forward and seek help. This has led to more arrests and increase in laws for rape and sexual assaults. For example, the maximum sentence for a rape suspect has recently been increased to twenty years. This helps woman feel somewhat safer in a country where they have to be on guard every time they leave their homes.
Laws about sex-selective abortions are in place but not being enforced very well. However, studies have shown that woman who have received at least ten years of
schooling and wealthier women are less likely to have as many abortions. Although not much has really been done to help decrease the number of female fetus abortions, the government is urging ultrasound technicians not to tell families the sex of the fetus. They are hoping this will help improve the female to male ratio in India.
Laws banning child brides have been in place since the seventies but families are still finding ways around it. Despite the stress it puts on young girls by becoming wives and mothers so young, families are in no rush to break the tradition. If officials paid more attention to this problem and really cracked down on the families of the children, there would be many more girls receiving better educations and childhoods before dealing with the pressure of starting a family before the age of eighteen.

More Indians are protesting selective abortion in hopes of increasing female to male ration in India.
If women were treated more equal to men, they would be happier and could lead a much less stressful life. This is only possible if sex-selective abortions stop, women get better educations, and men learn to respect their bodies.
