Rape/ Sexual Assault
The biggest issue for women in India is sexual assault. Every twenty minutes a woman is raped in India. Women cannot leave their house without the fear of something bad happening to them. The unfortunate reality for women in India is that men see themselves as being entitled to treat women however they please. There is some sort of crime against women every three minutes. That means every hour twenty women have been assaulted in some way or another by men. In most
cases, the women do no report the crimes because they are raised to believe it is their own faults and they do not want to disgrace their families.
The most noteworthy rape case in India is that of a 23 year old woman accompanied by her male friend on a bus who was gang raped and died in the hospital from her injuries December of 2012. This case sparked many protests to get stricter laws and help for women. The fact that a woman expects molestation each time she goes out in public shows that India is a long way from making the country safer for women so they do not have to fear for their lives at the hands of men.
